On 19-20 November 2026, Åbo Akademi University and the University of Turku are organising the annual colloquium of the Finnish Society for Environmental Social Science (YHYS) in Turku, Finland. Under the theme “Facts, Fictions and Sustainable Futures”, this event will explore how facts, narratives and imaginaries shape environmental action in times of crises and uncertainties. 

In the margins of this event, the DeCrises members Paul Arteaga (LUT University) and Mashiur Rahman (JYU) are organising the session “Digitalisation, Green Transition, and the Politics of Sustainable Futures: Data, Governance and Energy Systems in Europe”. This session will examine societies’ response to overlapping environmental, democratic and security crises through the lens of the EU’s twin transition. Focusing on the European Green Deal, the EU Digital Strategy, multilevel governance and digitalised energy systems, the discussion will explore how sustainable futures are imagined, governed and contested in Europe. 

In that context, we are inviting researchers and practitioners working on environmental governance, energy transitions, digitalisation, public policy, critical data studies, science and technology studies to join this session by submitting their papers that:

• Critically analyse the intersections between digitalisation, energy systems, and the green transition European, national, regional, or local contexts; 
• Examine policy documents, institutional narratives, expert knowledge, or socio-technical imaginaries related to the European Green Deal, the EU Digital Strategy, or digitalised energy systems; 
• Investigate governance gaps, contradictions, or tensions between EU-level objectives and their implementation, including policy ownership, deliberation, data security, public trust, institutional responsibility, and geopolitics; or 
• Contribute to environmental social science, energy-transition research, digitalisation studies, governance and policy analysis, critical data studies, science and technology studies, or socio-technical transition research.
