Exploring “Balticness” and resilience: DeCrises joins CBSS Summer University 2025 in Greifswald
DeCrises early-career researcher Giga Mukutadze participated in the CBSS Summer University 2025, “Resilient Identities in the Baltic Sea Region: Balticness in Transition,” hosted by the University of Greifswald, Germany, a consortium member of DeCrises.
Giga, whose PhD research focuses on horizontal governance in the European Union, examines how transnational municipal networks (TMNs) and environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) contribute to advancing the EU’s twin climate and digital transitions, under the supervision of DeCrises Principal Investigator Dr. Farid Karimi.
The Summer University brought together participants to discuss how societies in the Baltic region navigate long-term transformations such as the energy transition and ecosystem protection, and how collective resilience can be built and sustained. A central theme was the evolving notion of “Balticness,” explored as a shared regional identity that connects people to their environment, fosters collaborative governance structures, and helps counter populist or nationalist tendencies.
